The Great Start Collaborative presented Prevention and Youth Services/Drug Education Center (PAYS/DEC) at Stone Elementary School with its Family Friendly Business Spotlight Award on September 16, 2011. PAYS/DEC is a division of the Saginaw County Youth Protection Council and provides alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention services, including the Environmental Substance Abuse Prevention Program, which strives to create communities that promote healthy behaviors and attitudes, and reduce high-risk behaviors in youth associated with substance abuse. GSC Parent Coalition member Yalonda Freeman of Saginaw nominated PAYS based on her experiences at Stone Elementary School. “I appreciate all of the hard work they are doing in the Saginaw community,” she said. “They support parents and young children with elementary programs such as Protecting You, Protecting Me, Too Good for Drugs, and Too Good for Violence.”
Barnes & Noble store in Kochville Township received the Family Friendly Business Spotlight Award on December 14, 2011. According to Parent Coalition member Kelly Beougher, “They have many things going for children and families throughout the year. They have story times, Meet the Author present ations for children’s books and Meet the Characters with a person in a full costume who reads to the children. They put on mini celebrations for holidays, including Halloween trick-or-treat and craft day.” Barnes & Noble also helps schools and other agencies raise funds by donating a percentage of sales made on a specified day during a certain time frame. GSC plans to select six family friendly Saginaw County businesses this year.
